  Religious, Art and Architectural treasures to see

Midway between the sea and the mountains, the list of sanctuaries, hermitages, museums, castles, villages, necropolis and ancient Roman churches which are worth visiting is endless.

  • The most important and best known Sanctuary in Abruzzo is San Gabriele (St Gabriel’s), in the territory of Isola del Gran Sasso d’Italia, place of pilgrimage for 3 million pilgrims every year.

  • Celestino’s Hermitages (St Peter Celestine is particularly venerated in Abruzzo) are located among the rocks of the Morrone mountain.

  • The Ethnographic Museum and the Capitular Museum, Atri.

  • The National Archaeological Museum, Campli.

  • The “Circuito Culturale” Folk Museum , Castel del Monte.

  • The Museum of Ceramics and the International Collection of Contemporary Art, Castelli.

  • The Historic Museum and collection of Weapons and Maps, Civitella del Tronto Fortress.

  • The Folk Museum, Controguerra, Val Vibrata.

  • The Folk Museum, Fano Adriano.

  • Giulianova is a city with many interesting places to see throughout its territory: the “Lo splendore” Museum of Modern Art, the “Vincenzo Bindi” Picture Gallery, the Archaeological Park, the Bartolomei Chapel, the “Il Bianco” Archaeological Museum, Gaetano Braga House and Museum.

  • The Stauros Museum of Contemporary Sacred Art, Isola del Gran Sasso d’Italia.

  • The Life and Natural Sciences Museum, San Giuliano and the National Museum of Abruzzo, L’Aquila.

  • The Archaeological Museum and the Picture Gallery, Teramo.

  • The art and Crafts Museum, Tossicia.

  • The Art Gallery and Folk Museum, Roseto degli Abruzzi.

  • The “Miracolo Eucaristico” Sanctuary, Lanciano.

  • The “Volto Santo” Sanctuary, Manoppello.

  • The “San Tommaso” Sanctuary , Ortona.

A visit to the following heritage centres is a very interesting way to discover the roots of modern Abruzzo:

  • Alba Fucens, with the remains of the most important Roman city in Abruzzo.

  • Amiternum, Sabine city, and its imposing amphitheatre.

  • The Crypt, Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral.

  • The Capitular Museum; San Domenico and Sant’Agostino Churches (XIV century), Atri.

  • The “Piana di Campovalano”(the Campovalano plain land) and San Pietro Church; the fourteenth-century San Francesco Church, Santa Maria in Platea Church and the Holy Stairs, Campli.

  • The remains of the Roman theatre and amphitheatre, San Berardo Cathedral, San Francesco, Sant’Agostino and Madonna delle Grazie Churches in the oldest part of Teramo, once called Interamnia Pretuzia.

  • Santa Maria Assunta and San Franco Church, Assergi.

  • San Nicola and San Francesco medieval Church, Rocca di Calascio.
