  The Sea

The coast of Abruzzo is about 130 km long, and is succession of cliffs, coves and golden beaches. The sandy seashore stretching between the river Tronto (the northern boundary with Marche) and the river Foro (south of Pescara) gives way to the pebbled beaches at the foot of the charming cliffs of Ortona, Punta del Cavalluccio and Punta Aderci

In all of Europe, Abruzzo is the only region with 7 beach resorts in the same territory (the province of Teramo) all of which awarded with the European Blue Flag for clean , unpolluted waters. From north to south, these towns come one after another: Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica (also popular for its lively nightlife), Tortoreto Lido, Giulianova (whose wide seashore and port are both worth mentioning), Roseto degli Abruzzi (well-known for a 10 km seashore equipped with several tourist facilities), Pineto (whose name is due to a wonderful wood of pine trees growing by the sea) and Silvi Marina.

The shoreline stretching along the territory of Pescara includes the towns of Marina di Città Sant’Angelo and Montesilvano, as well as Pescara. This is the most densely populated city in Abruzzo, a very important administrative and commercial centre, whose port is used for both trade and tourist purposes. Well-known as D’Annunzio ‘s birthplace (the house of the famous poet is open to visitors) and as the place where Flaiano wrote the scripts for “La Dolce Vita”, Pescara has a very charming old centre which is worth visiting. Southwards in the territory of Chieti, the coastline is characterized by the presence of “trabocchi” (ancient pile huts fixed into the seabed for fishing purposes) as well as for its several fine sandy beaches, wild cliffs and small coves which lead to Francavilla al Mare. This lively beach resort, home of an important yacht club, is followed by Ortona, Marina di San Vito, Fossacesia Marina, Torino di Sangro Marina, Lido di Casal Bordino, Marina di Vasto and San Salvo Marina.
