Local handicrafts
Ceramists, stone masons, goldsmiths, carvers, smiths,
weavers, coppersmiths... in Abruzzo craftsmen live
and work “next door” all over the territory making
wonderful, high quality products
For more than 3 centuries the small town of Castelli
at the foot of the Gran Sasso has been one of the
most important places in the world for the
production of ceramics. Guardiagrele is well known
for silver manufacturing (jewels and filigree),
while Pescocostanzo e Scanno are famous for
metalworking (iron and copper).
The pillow laces from Scanno and the woollen
blankets from Pratola Peligna are beautiful handmade
textiles which is worth mentioning.
“ddu botte” is a
popular musical instrument handmade in the province
of Teramo; rattles, shawms and pipes are made out
the excellent beechwood from the mountains of
Abruzzo.
Abruzzo is also known for its leather goods: besides
the most traditional items, such as belts, bags and
purses, the high quality leather saddles made in
L’Aquila are very sought-after among horsemen all
over the world.
Wicker baskets are another typical handicraft from
Abruzzo. |
